I hated our white door + 80s glass window since we moved in! We looked into costs of a brand new door but with installation they were easy $1,000. No bueno. So I took a risk and decided to cover the ugly glass with plywood (because the rest of the door was totally fine — why replace the whole thing!)
See isn’t this glass so disgusting!? (Sorry for the crappy iPhone before pictures — I promise I’ll start putting more effort into those! ha) I went to Home Depot not knowing what material I wanted to use..but I stumbled upon this 2’x4′ panel for $6. It was big enough to afford a mistake if I cut one piece wrong — and thank goodness, because that did happen. (**If I could do this again, I would choose something even thinner and less warped, because I ran into issues with a corner popping up when I was caulking it! Read on to hear more about that.) I did some Pinterest research and found that in order to paint a metal door, you need to prime it with Glidden Gripper. The tutorial suggested to tint it grey if you’re painting the door a dark color, so I did that as well. The color I chose was Behr’s Broadway and I’m so so happy with my pick because it matches my curio cabinet perfectly. The paint guy at Home Depot suggested I do a flat finish on the door…so I listened…but I totally wish I didn’t because it shows every scuff mark?! So I will eventually do another coat with more shine and protection. I used my jigsaw to cut to board into the windows size, then I used liquid nails to initially stick the board to the glass. Next, I used Windows Trim and Door sealant (found in the paint isle) to fill the gaps. Because this board was a little warped (yikes), I had major issues with getting one corner to stick down. Which resulting in me literally applying pressure for an hour + adding extra liquid nails behind it to ensure it sticks. So if you want to do this project, find something thinner and easily bends — just make sure you’re able to paint it!
My corners were pretty imperfect because of this but from afar you can’t tell — so it’s fine with me! LOL.
