Adding carpet to the stairs has been on my never-ending DIY list for a while now! Sean and Brady have been slipping down these wood stairs since we moved in so it was a no-brainer to do this project ASAP. This was so easy — any DIYer can tackle this one!
Here’s what you need:
- Carpet runner long enough to cover stairs. Here’s the one I got.
- Staple gun
- Air compressor
- 9/16″ staples
- Max grip carpet tape, double sided
Directions:
- Measure your stairs with a sewing measuring tape so it will bend to the stairs and you’ll know the exact length you’ll need.
- I bought this carpet runner off Wayfair in 11′ and am so happy with it!
- Add carpet tape on each stair –see photo below. (do not exceed the width of the carpet runner)
- Measure your stair width so your carpet runner is centered to begin. Be aware of keeping your runner centered at each step you staple because it will sway!
- Start at the first step and staple 3-4 times across the top. When you get to the bottom of the step, where it creases and then goes into the next step, take screw driver and press the carpet into the corner (like the photo below).
- Next staple under the lip of the next stair (at least 6-7 staples — this is the only place you will staple for each stair!)
- When you get to the end of the stair and have left over carpet, cut 2 inches from the bottom of the stairs. A good pair of household scissors worked for me!
Fold the remaining two inches under and staple away!
Hope you found this tutorial easy, helpful and inspiring!!!
